"Furthermore, Preceptor Daxing said: 'If there is anyone who can practice buddhānusmṛti according to the Amitābha-sūtra, not grasping at external appearances, whose mind solely trusts the Buddha, whose mouth solely invokes the Buddha, whose body solely reveres the Buddha, who can endure what goes against his inclinations, wearing coarse clothing first, eating crude food first, possessing filial piety, righteousness, and benevolence, concentrating wholeheartedly on buddhānusmṛti, not falling back when encountering circumstances, never wavering unto death, neither doing mixed goods nor doing evil, but solely concentrating on buddhānusmṛti—if someone can be like this, Daxing will flay his own skin to give him to wear as clothes, and cut off his own flesh to give him to eat as food. If, practicing buddhānusmṛti according to the sūtra, one is not reborn in the pure land, and invoking the Buddha once does not extinguish the sins of birth-and-death of eighty billion kalpas, nor obtain the subtle and wondrous merits of eighty billion kalpas, and I do not flay my skin to give him to wear or cut my flesh to give him to eat, thereby deceiving and confusing sentient beings, may Daxing immediately receive retribution: may my six faculties rot and decay, may sores break out across my entire body, causing people to see agony hard to endure, and in the future may I go straight into hell never to come out again!' This is where Preceptor Daxing established his vow.
