2.53

答曰：「亦如口打鼓。何以？因口誦心記，乃打由成；若無心口，無由得成。念佛亦爾，心信口稱，乃生淨土，速證無上菩提；若無心口，無由往生，所以如口打鼓。」

Answer: "It is indeed like beating a drum with the mouth. Why? Because it is through recitation by the mouth and recollection in the mind that beating the drum succeeds; without mind and mouth, there would be no means for it to succeed. Buddhānusmṛti is also like this: with faith in the mind and recitation by the mouth, one is born in the pure land and quickly realizes unexcelled bodhi; without mind and mouth, there would be no means to attain rebirth. Therefore, it is like beating a drum with the mouth."
