First, regarding doubting the teacher: there are two kinds of teachers. First, deviant and non-Buddhist teachers who delude and confuse people; they are not to be relied upon. Second, teachers of the true Dharma; they further have the ordinary and sage, cause and effect. Those who are ordinary and in the causal stage may well not have complete understanding—just as Bhaviveka said that the present Maitreya is not yet all-knowing, and waited until after the path at the Dragon Flower [tree] to inquire again. That is such a case. Now, those who reveal the West to lead people to dedicate merit are solely the holy teacher, the fruit Buddha, Śākyamuni Tathāgata, and the Buddhas of the ten directions, who extend their broad and long tongues to speak sincere and truthful words praising and encouraging rebirth. What further doubt can there be?
