Gushan's Commentary on the Amitābha Sūtra says: "Since the Drum-Sound King Sūtra mentions both women and evil, rebellious persons, does this not mean that Amitābha manifests an impure land? The Resolution of Doubts by [the Master of] Tianzhu says: 'Vasubandhu's treatise states that women and those with defective sense faculties are not born there. The Drum-Sound King Buddha's mother refers only to the time of his initial descent and birth. Once he attained true awakening, the land became pure accordingly, and there are certainly no women. His mother either transformed into a man, like the Nāga girl in this realm, or her life came to an end, like Siddhārtha's mother.' Between what the two masters have stated, Tianzhu's is correct. Because the sūtra speaks of being far removed from the womb and from defiled desires, and the Buddha encourages people to seek rebirth there; it is merely that capacities differ, causing slight variations and concessions in comparison with other sūtras."
