孤山疏曰「不可以少善根得生，則反顯可以多善得生也。少善謂等閑發願、散亂稱名。多善謂執持名號、要期日限。執謂執受，持謂任持。信力故執受在心，念力故任持不忘。」

Gushan's commentary says: "Saying that one cannot obtain birth with few roots of goodness conversely reveals that one can obtain birth with many roots of goodness. 'Few roots of goodness' refers to making vows casually and reciting the name with a scattered mind. 'Many roots of goodness' refers to upholding the name and fixing a period of days. 'Holding' means grasping and receiving; 'maintaining' means carrying on without interruption. Due to the power of faith one grasps and receives it in mind; due to the power of mindfulness one maintains it without forgetting."
