The Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra states: 'The nine grades in the Contemplation Sūtra are intended to make known the superior, middle, and inferior levels of rank, which are precisely the three grades of the larger text.' The Record of Corrected Standards from Gushan states: 'The three grades of the larger text only correspond to the [first] six grades of the Contemplation Sūtra, because those three grades purely explain wholesome conduct and do not extend to evil people. Lingzhi stated, "The three grades of the larger text all involve having once aroused the bodhi-mind, so they can correspond to the upper grade of the Contemplation Sūtra, whereas the middle and lower two grades are not what they correspond to, not to mention that the causes of practice are entirely different from those here." The Corrective Explanation states: "Tiantai equated the nine grades of the present sūtra with the three grades of the larger text based on the correspondence between their higher and lower ranks of stage, not by matching the three grades according to the characteristics of practicing causes and arousing the mind."'
