Maitreya addressed the Buddha, saying: "As spoken by the Buddha regarding the merits and benefits of Amitābha Buddha's World of Utmost Bliss, if there are sentient beings who give rise to ten kinds of minds, and in accord with each and every mind focus exclusively on the Buddha, when these people end their lives, they will attain rebirth. World-Honoured One! What are called the ten kinds of minds?" The Buddha told Maitreya: "Such ten minds are not what ordinary, foolish, unwholesome men endowed with afflictions can bring forth. What are the ten? First, giving rise to great loving-kindness toward all sentient beings, with a mind free of harm; second, giving rise to great compassion toward all sentient beings, with a mind free of affliction and oppression; third, not sparing body and life for the Buddha's true Dharma, with a mind taking joy in guarding and protecting it; fourth, generating superior forbearance toward all phenomena, with an unattached mind; fifth, not coveting gain, respect, and reverence, with a pure and joyful mind; sixth, seeking the Buddha's all-inclusive wisdom at all times, with an unforgetting mind; seventh, respecting and revering all sentient beings, with a mind free of disdain; eighth, not clinging to worldly treatises, producing a resolute mind regarding the factors of awakening; ninth, planting all roots of goodness, with a pure mind free of defilement; tenth, toward all Tathāgatas, abandoning all marks and giving rise to a mind of continuous mindfulness. These are called the ten kinds of minds generated by a bodhisattva. Due to these minds, one will attain rebirth. If a person accomplishes even a single mind among these ten minds and joyfully desires rebirth in that buddha's world, it is impossible that they will not attain birth (the ninety-second fascicle of the sutra)."
