佛告目連：「譬如萬川長流，有浮草木，前不顧後、後不顧前，都會大海。世間亦爾，雖有豪貴富樂自在，悉不得免生老病死。秖由不信佛經，後世為人，更甚困劇，不能得生千佛國土。是故我說，無量壽國易往易取，而人不能修行往生，返事九十六種邪道。我說是人名無眼人、名無耳人。」

The Buddha told Maudgalyāyana: "Just as ten thousand streams flow long, carrying floating grasses and trees, the front not looking to the rear and the rear not looking to the front, all gathering in the great sea; the world is also like this: although there are noble, rich, joyful, and free individuals, none can avoid birth, old age, sickness, and death. Merely because of not believing the Buddha's sutras, in future lives as humans they will be even more distressed and exhausted, unable to attain birth in the lands of the thousand buddhas. Therefore, I say that the country of Immeasurable Life is easy to reach and easy to take, yet people cannot cultivate to attain rebirth, turning instead to serve ninety-six kinds of heterodox paths. I call such people sightless people and earless people."
