The Buddha told Ānanda: 'All worldly beings continue in birth and death; birth follows habitual tendencies, and death follows transforming flows. At the time when life is about to end, before the warm touch has dissipated, the good and evil of an entire lifetime all appear at once. Pure thought brings flight, leading inevitably to birth in heaven. If, within this flying mind, there is also merit, wisdom, and a pure vow, the mind will naturally open, one will see the Buddhas of the ten directions, and take rebirth according to one's vows in any pure land. With little emotion and much thought, one’s light flight is not far, and one becomes a flying immortal. With emotion and thought in equal measure, one neither flies nor falls, but is born in the human realm: when thought is clear, one is intelligent; when emotion is obscure, one is dull. With much emotion and little thought, one flows into the animal realm, the heavier into furred beasts, the lighter into winged birds. With seven parts emotion and three parts thought, one sinks beneath the water wheel, is born at the boundary of fire, receives the vapor of fierce flames, becomes a hungry ghost, is constantly burned, finds water harmful to oneself, and has neither food nor drink for hundreds of thousands of kalpas. With nine parts emotion and one part thought, one penetrates down into the fire wheel; if lighter, one is born in the hell with interval, and if heavier, in the hell of uninterrupted suffering—the two kinds of hells. Pure emotion causes one to sink directly into the Avīci Hell. If within this sinking mind there has been disparagement of the Mahāyāna, violation of the Buddha’s prohibitive precepts, deceptive preaching of the Dharma, empty grasping for donations from the faithful, improper reception of reverence, or the five rebellious acts and the ten grave offenses, one is further reborn in the Avīci Hells of the ten directions.'
