At that time, Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, in the great assembly of Vairocana, said to the Buddha: 'For the sake of sentient beings of evil destinies in the future defiled world, I speak the dhāraṇī of Immeasurable Life, cultivate the gate of the three mysteries, realize the buddha-mindfulness samādhi, attain rebirth in the Pure Land, and enter the bodhisattva stages. Not with meager merit and devoid of the expedient means of wisdom can one be born in that land; by relying on this teaching, one will definitely attain rebirth in the superior grade at the initial stage. One should first enter the maṇḍala, and having received abhiṣeka, subsequently receive this ritual protocol from the master. In an excellent place, one should smear and clean a pure room, erect a square altar, spread a canopy above, and hang banners all around. Distribute eight maṇḍalas upon the altar, grind white sandalwood incense, and use it to smear the sacred seats. In the west of the altar, place an image of Immeasurable Life; the practitioner sits in the east facing the image, sitting on a low-legged couch. The practitioner bathes daily, ascends the altar, scatters various flowers at the three times of the day, sets out two argha vessels or new precious utensils, fills them with scented water, and places them upon the altar. At the four corners of the altar, place four auspicious vases, prepare incense, flowers, food, and drink according to one's capacity, empower each of them, and diligently make offerings. The practitioner then contemplates that the original nature of all sentient beings is pure, but clouded by adventitious defilements so that they do not realize the true reality. For this reason, I speak of this empowerment of the three mysteries, which can cause oneself and others to become pure.'
