賢首《起信疏》曰「往生有三位：一如蓮華未開，信行未滿，未名不退；但以處無退緣，故稱不退。二信位滿足已去，華開見佛，入十住位，得少分見法身，住正定位也。三三賢位滿，入初地已去，證遍滿法身，生無邊佛土，如佛記龍樹等住初地生淨土等也。此中畢竟等，是後二位。」

Xianshou's Commentary on the Awakening of Faith says: 'There are three ranks of rebirth: First, like a lotus flower that has not yet opened, where the practice of faith is not yet complete, it is not yet named non-retrogression; but because the place has no conditions for retrogression, it is called non-retrogression. Second, after the rank of faith has been fulfilled, the flower opens and one sees the Buddha, enters the rank of the ten abodes, attains partial vision of the dharmakāya, and abides in the definitely determined stage. Third, when the ranks of the three worthies are fulfilled and one has entered the first bhūmi and beyond, one realizes the all-pervading dharmakāya and is born in boundless buddha-lands—just as the Buddha prophesied that Nāgārjuna and others, abiding in the first bhūmi, would be reborn in the Pure Land, and so forth. In this context, "ultimately", etc., refers to the latter two ranks.'
