昔釋迦牟尼佛住世行化，至一俗舍，見翁婆二人以穀一斗記數，共念阿彌陀佛，願生淨土。佛言：「我有異方便，令汝於一聲中念得多穀之數。」遂令念上佛名。

Formerly, when Śākyamuni Buddha dwelt in the world and was converting beings, he came to a lay household and saw an old man and woman using a peck of grain to keep count, together being mindful of Amitābha Buddha and aspiring to be born in the Pure Land. The Buddha said: 'I have a distinct expedient that will cause you, in a single utterance, to recite the count of many pecks of grain.' He then instructed them to recite the above name of the Buddha.
