I once read the Chongxu zhide jing and found the words of Lin Lei, who held that when one dies here, how does one know one will not be born there? Although I knew that death and birth are a going and a returning, when I sought its explanation I could not grasp it, thinking that dying here is merely shedding this retribution body, but where ultimately does one born there end up? This is why I sought its explanation and could not find it. Now, seeing the Treatise on Illustrious Teachers and Superior Places written by Chan Master Fuqing, I have for the first time learned that beyond the mundane world there are separately the Inner Court of Tuṣita and the Western Pure Land, serving as places of reliance for everyone. Without the accumulated habit of continuous mindfulness, one cannot arrive there. Thereupon I repeatedly reviewed his explanations, investigating how within the original nature's empty quiescence there is no characteristic of annihilation: when the retribution of this life is exhausted, there is still another life. If one maintains steadfast vow-power and accomplishes good roots, not only will there be no worry of sinking into evil destinies, one will definitely have a place to ascend to superior retribution. From now on I have finally realized that Tuṣita and the West are not separated by the tip of a hair; they are ever manifest before us. Only be firm in this mind, and one can see the Buddha. As Miaoxi said: 'Seeing the Amitābha of one's self-nature, one understands the Pure Land of mind-only'—this may truly sum up this treatise in a single phrase. The Master was the genuine successor of Miaoxi; having found a place of reliance under an illustrious teacher, he was able to benefit sentient beings with correct discourses on the three places. Participant in Determining Governmental Matters and Grand Dignitary Master Zhou (Kui) obtained it and wrote a preface for it, stating that the Master's words are trustworthy and verified; he also appreciated that he penetrated both the principle and the teaching, not contradicting the true mark and the doctrinal characteristics, and that with heartfelt grandmotherly kindness he offered such earnest words. O benevolent ones! If you can use Master Zhou's preface to seek the old teacher's mind, then for Tuṣita and the West you need not trouble yourselves to ask the way—just go straight ahead! Respectfully appended by the Layman Duxing, Lin Hao.
