Dharma Master Yuan resided at the foot of Mount Lu, upholding the monastic precepts with rigorous asceticism; past noon he would not even accept honey-water. Yet he wrote poetry to exchange for wine and drank with Tao of Pengze. When seeing off guests, whether noble or lowly, he would not cross Tiger Creek; yet walking with Daoist Lu, he crossed Tiger Creek by a hundred paces, and parted with great laughter. Therefore Chanyue composed a poem saying: "Loving Magistrate Tao who was tipsy and nodding, / seeing off Daoist Lu, walking lingeringly slow; / buying wine and crossing the creek both broke the precepts; / what kind of man was this, and the master was like this!" Thus I imitate it.
