公嚴州人，智識高明，少年登第。崇寧初直言極諫，名著當時。酷好宗門，參善知識，蔬食葛衣，砥節礪行。晚年專修淨業，悟入念佛三昧，有念佛方便文刻石流布，指導群生。宣和末知廣濟軍，一日不疾，跏趺而化，知其為淨土之歸矣。其文曰：

The gentleman was a native of Yanzhou, possessed of lofty intelligence and discernment, who passed the civil examinations at a young age. At the beginning of the Chongning era, he offered straightforward and outspoken remonstrances, his name renowned in his time. He was exceedingly fond of the Chan lineage, visiting good spiritual friends, eating vegetables and wearing kudzu cloth, tempering his integrity and refining his conduct. In his later years he exclusively cultivated Pure Land karma and awakened to enter the buddha-mindfulness samādhi. He had the 'Exposition on Expedient Means of Buddha-Mindfulness' carved on stone to circulate and guide sentient beings. At the end of the Xuanhe era, while serving as administrator of Guangji Military Prefecture, one day without illness he passed away sitting cross-legged; thus it was known that he had returned to the Pure Land.
