In the West there are many joyful things,
Hard to describe across vast kalpas.
Has the lifespan ever had an end?
How could the radiance have a boundary?
The breeze of the Way blows through green orchids;
The waters of samādhi put forth red lotuses.
Where the ocean-like assembly pays homage to the Lord,
Heavenly flowers fall before the seats.
The ocean-like assembly is entirely pure;
The path to bodhi is easy to accomplish.
Every thought is right mindfulness;
Every object accords with the True Vehicle.
The ground of nature is clear as lapis lazuli;
The flock of birds sings with the complete sound.
You must indeed ascend to the shore of awakening;
Do not let yourself linger in the City of Doubt.
Feet tread upon the ground of freedom from sorrow;
Bodies abide in the village of no old age.
In the six periods of the day they pay court to the Sage Lord;
At early dawn they visit other directions.
Jewelled palaces follow along with their bodies;
Heavenly flowers fragrance lands everywhere.
Returning, they come back to their original dwelling;
How long-lasting is the taste of the joy of dhyāna!
Do not say the West is far away;
The West is right before one's eyes.
Although it is more than a hundred thousand [lands] away,
It has never been separate from the three thousand [realms].
No sooner is the mouth opened in buddha-mindfulness
Than a lotus is already planted in the flowered pond.
If faith does not regress,
You are certain to bow to the Golden Immortal.
The ponds congeal with the water of merit;
The wind stirs the sounds of pipes and strings.
Jewelled nets veil the empty space;
Storeyed pavilions reflect upon the jewelled grove.
The six senses constantly harmonize with the Way;
The myriad realms are understood to be mind-only.
It is not that it is hard for people to reach;
It is entirely because their faith is not deep.
Practices and deeds are divided into three tiers,
Yet the lotus flowers share a single pond.
Having ascended to Ultimate Bliss,
One is certain to attain the status of non-retrogression.
When obstructions are exhausted and light shines forth,
When the mind opens and sees the Buddha,
The boundless joy within that realm
Can only be known by fellow travellers on the Way.
Ultimate Bliss is the principle of tathatā;
Amitābha is the light of wisdom.
When deluded, one sinks in this land;
When awakened, one goes to the West.
The surging wheel of rebirth comes to an end;
The long lifespan stretches far and wide.
The root of faith in just a single thought,
And the mind-ground is already cool and clear.
With deep faith, one must ultimately go;
With much doubt, it cannot be known.
A pure mind relies on a single thought,
And meritorious practice surpasses asamkhyeyas.
One immediately joins the rank of avaivartika,
And equals even the bodhisattvas of next birth.
One should be vigorous in advancing practice;
There is no need to wait for a long time.
Someone asked the Chan folk:
"The Chan gate forgets all worldly matters;
Since one can transcend even Ultimate Bliss,
Why must one go to the West?"
Yet listen to the words of the Chan folk:
"The West is the original home.
Aśvaghoṣa personally gave instructions,
And Nāgārjuna also praised it."
Do not speak of the suffering of Sahā;
The suffering of Sahā is agonizing:
Greed, anger, and ignorance disorder the mind;
Skin, flesh, and blood make up the body.
A cavern of rākṣasas of hatred and animosity;
A hamlet of the skandhas and āyatanas of avidyā.
You must indeed ascend to Ultimate Bliss;
Do not procrastinate on the road home.
Do not speak of the suffering of Sahā;
The suffering of Sahā is the deepest:
Demons and heretics constantly keep one company;
Illness and sickness repeatedly afflict one.
A place of lust and bewitching forms and sounds;
A mind of dhyāna that is quiet and aloof.
You must indeed ascend to Ultimate Bliss;
Do not hesitate on the road home.
Do not speak of the suffering of Sahā;
It causes one's tears to stream down:
Turning within the wheel of the three disasters;
Burning within the fire of the five pains.
The light of the crane trees has long been obscured;
The assembly of the Dragon Flower is still remote.
You must indeed ascend to Ultimate Bliss;
Do not begrudge the toil on the road home.
Do not speak of the suffering of Sahā;
Vaidehī addressed the World-Honoured One:
The kalpa encounters the defilement of afflictions;
Her son was called 'Unborn Enemy.'
How rebellious was Devadatta's mind!
Do not even speak of Bimbisāra's resentment.
You must indeed ascend to Ultimate Bliss;
Such evil has never been heard of there.
