The Divine Mantra for Uprooting the Roots of All Karmic Obstacles and Attaining Rebirth in the Pure Land. In the Yuanjia era of the Song dynasty, Guṇabhadra translated it by imperial order; it has fifty-nine characters and fifteen phrases in total. If someone is able to recite this mantra, Amitābha Buddha will constantly dwell upon their crown, day and night guarding and protecting them, not allowing their enemies to gain an advantage over them; in the present life they will always obtain peace and tranquility, and at the end of life will spontaneously attain rebirth. Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna, wishing to be reborn in the Peaceful Nurture, was inspired in a dream to receive this mantra. Tripiṭaka Master Naśe recited this mantra, and Dharma Master Xiu of Tianping Temple received oral transmission of this mantra from Naśe. He said: "The scriptural text did not come from foreign countries. If one wishes to receive and uphold it, one should chew on a willow branch, rinse the mouth with washing powder, burn incense, and kneeling on both knees with palms joined before a Buddha image, recite it twenty-one times during each of the six periods of the day and night. All the sins of the four grave offenses, five rebellious acts, ten evil deeds, and slandering the Vaipulya teachings will be completely eradicated; all desires in the present life will be attained, and one will not be deluded or disturbed by evil ghosts and spirits. If one completes two hundred thousand recitations, one will inspire the sprout of bodhi to grow. If one reaches three hundred thousand recitations, one will see Amitābha Buddha face to face."
