The origin of the above venerable name of the Buddha is not found in any of the Pure Land sūtras. It first derived from Chan Master Feixi's Baowang lun in the Tang, which used this buddha-name to establish the gate of 'reciting many buddhas in a single thought'. Next, Vice Minister Wang Gu's Zhizhi jingtu jueyi ji adopted it. Later, the Longshu jingtu wen extensively encouraged people to accept and uphold it, stating: 'I once compared it with nonglutinous rice grain; one ge contains one thousand eight hundred grains. If one recites this name once, it fulfills the count of two thousand dan of grain. Since the Buddha himself taught people with this, its merit is truly inconceivable.' Notably, because the Baowang lun does not record the sūtra or treatise from which it emerges, it is especially an incomplete canon. Fearing that reciters now might wish to know, it is recorded and presented here.
