Elder Zha'an in his lifetime studied the Buddha and maintained the precepts, his integrity pure like ice and frost. In literary matters his elevated discourse was like jade sceptres; he had ample energy for preaching and training, and had no idle moments in fixing his mindfulness. When his pure karma was completed, one night he saw himself above the golden pond, with several persons holding instruments, seemingly preparing to play music to welcome his coming; not many days later he passed away. Previously he composed this piece bidding himself farewell, from which we know he had decisively set off to roam in the West. None who heard of it failed to sigh in admiration at what could not be equaled. Alas! Mind-only and original nature are inherently possessed by everyone; why envy an abundance of fish instead of weaving a net to catch them? As Ziyun said regarding the solitary wasp's prayer: "Be like me, be like me"—over time it resembles it. How could one realize this without cultivating? The meaning of this farewell is indeed sufficient to encourage future practitioners. His disciple Yuan'you brought his text to show me, so I appended this colophon at the end. Respectfully inscribed by Yin'an (Zuo Zhiwei).
