The Dao is rooted in the One, / yet branches into disparate gates; / taking nature as one's surname, / one returns to its root.
Nameless, yet bearing a name, / the master's teaching is revered; / provisionally used to instruct beings, / it is not where one truly abides.
Not dwelling in a vast hometown, / not holding close a great clan, / profound intention shines brightly within, / while empty stillness manifests benevolence without.
The Sage has bequeathed words, / to be investigated and pursued with diligence; / yet only through diligence and silence, / does one pass away like a floating cloud.
The teachings, long enduring, grew faint; / the world rarely investigated or explained them.
Thereupon arose Great Wisdom (Zhiyi), / issuing forth from his authentic gate,
Revealing it in proximity, / to cause the people to become entirely renewed.
When passions stir, change arises, / and beings are submerged and lost thereby;
Thereupon the Land of Bliss is bestowed, / joining in the source of transformation.
The master used it to guide and lead, / that the people would not be benighted.
The Dao's function is non-active, / the spiritual practice leaves no trace;
Darkness and brightness are both as such, / life and death are equally tranquil.
The Dharma was entrusted to later students, / bestowed without wearying;
Buried alongside our teacher, / do not forget the true abode.
Inscribing this illustrious epitaph, / engraved upon this dark stone.
