Practitioners of pure karma, whenever entering contemplation or sleeping, should first stand up with palms joined, face west with single-minded devotion, and recite ten times the names of Amitābha Buddha, Avalokiteśvara, Mahāsthāmaprāpta, and the Pure Assembly of the Ocean of Beings. Next, before the Buddha, make the vow: 'This disciple is currently an ordinary being of birth and death, with grave sins and hindrances, transmigrating in the six paths with unspeakable suffering. Now having met a good spiritual friend and heard the name of Amitābha's fundamental vow, I recite it single-mindedly and vow to seek rebirth. May the Buddha take pity and extend his hand to welcome me. This disciple does not know the bodily marks and radiance of the World-Honoured One Amitābha; may the Buddha and bodhisattvas manifest their bodily marks, the adornments of that world, and so forth.' Having said these words, with single-minded right mindfulness, one then enters contemplation or sleep. Some see auspicious signs precisely while making the vow, some see them within contemplation, and some see them in dreams. This vow has recently had great manifest verification that cannot be fully recounted; only those who vigorously practice it will believe it is not in vain.
