The scholar Li Yuan and the monk Yuanze shared a deep spiritual bond. One day they agreed to travel together to Western Shu. Li wished to go by way of Jingzhou, while Ze wished to go by way of Chang'an. Having no choice, Ze complied with Yuan's wishes. When their boat arrived at the southern shore of Jingzhou, they suddenly saw a woman in a brocade apron carrying water. Seeing her, Ze wept and said: 'My reluctance to go this way was precisely because of this. She is of the Wang family, and I am destined to become her child; she has been pregnant for three years. Now that I have come, there is no escape. Three days from now, when she bathes the child, please come visit me; my smile will serve as the pledge. Twelve years from now, on the night of the Mid-Autumn moon, we can meet outside Tianzhu Monastery in Hangzhou.' Having spoken, he passed away while sitting. The woman eventually gave birth, and after three days, Yuan went and asked to see the child; he indeed smiled. Twelve years later, Yuan kept his appointment. Arriving beside the Gehong Stream by West Lake, he suddenly heard a herd boy tapping his ox's horns and singing: 'The former spirit on the Stone of Three Lifetimes— / Enjoying the moon and chanting in the wind need not be discussed. / I am ashamed that my dear friend has visited from afar; / Though this body has changed, the nature eternally endures.' Yuan thereupon asked: 'Is Master Ze well?' He replied: 'Lord Li is truly a man of his word! However, my secular karmic connections are not yet exhausted, so please do not approach. Only by diligently cultivating without falling into bad realms will we meet again.' Having spoken, he sang again: 'Matters before and after this life are boundless; / To speak of causes and conditions might break the heart. / The mountains and rivers of Wu and Yue have already been searched throughout; / Turning back the misty oars, I go up to Qutang.' Having spoken, he departed. (Found in Dongpo daquan. If judged according to the Great Song's Gaoseng [zhuan], he is called Dharma Master Yuanguan. It is not known which is correct.)
