According to the Xu gaoseng zhuan, Dharma Master Huibu was a man of Guangling, whose surname was Hao; his family was originally a military general's lineage. From his youth he harboured virtuous conduct. Following a master, he shaved his head and dyed his robes, deeply investigating the Way; at that time he was called 'Huibu who attained wisdom'. Various princes of the Chen dynasty once received the precepts from him. The master once had the saying: 'Though the region is pure, it is not my aspiration. If I were made to spend twelve great kalpas inside a lotus flower unable to see the Buddha, merely enjoying bliss by myself, it would not be as good as saving suffering sentient beings in the three wretched paths.' Near the end of the master's life, the great earth shook for seven days. As he passed away in the seated posture, his hand bent three fingers. The Grand Astrologer reported to the throne: 'The star of a man who attained the Way has been extinguished.'
