The Commentary on the Contemplation Sūtra [states]: "Question: The sūtra says: 'If one sees me through form or seeks me through sound, this person walks a heterodox path and cannot see the Tathāgata.' Now, contemplating the Buddha and reciting the Buddha's name—is this not seeing through form and seeking through sound? Answer: The thirty-two marks are like the bright moon cast across a hundred rivers; the four unimpeded talents and eight voices are like clear echoes sounding from a deep valley. Yet there are those who plunge into a pool to grasp the moon or enter a valley to chase after echoes; not understanding the emptiness of nature, they do not see the Buddha. A person of penetration is not like this: understanding that form is not form, what harm is there in contemplating the sacred countenance directly? Understanding that sound is not sound, how does it hinder listening attentively to the wondrous Dharma? Thus the Avataṃsaka states: 'Form is not the Buddha, and sound is likewise; yet neither apart from form and sound can the Buddha's supernormal powers be seen.' Beholding these wondrous words, how could any doubt or hindrance arise again?"
