The Treatise Resolving Doubts states: "I observe that in the world there are ten kinds of people who cannot recite the Buddha's name at the end of life. First, they may not necessarily meet a good spiritual friend, so there is no one to exhort them to mindfulness. Second, the suffering of their karma torments their bodies, leaving them no leisure to recite the Buddha's name. Third, or they may suffer a stroke and lose their speech, unable to invoke the Buddha. Fourth, they may become mad and lose their minds, making focused contemplation difficult to achieve. Fifth, or they may encounter fire or water, having no time for sincere intention. Sixth, they may encounter jackals and wolves, with no good spiritual friend remaining. Seventh, evil companions at the end of life may destroy their faith. Eighth, they may overeat excessively and fall into a coma leading to death. Ninth, in the clash of military combat, they may suddenly perish. Tenth, they may abruptly fall from a high cliff, fatally destroying their lives. Sentient beings of these ten kinds will definitely not recite the Buddha's name at the end of life to gain rebirth. One must cultivate in advance so that one's pure karma is established beforehand; then even if one encounters difficult conditions, one will certainly be welcomed and guided by Amitābha to go [to the Pure Land]."
