《傳燈錄》「有僧問講彌陀經座主曰：『水鳥樹林皆悉念佛念法念僧。作麼生？』講座主曰：『基法師道「真友不待請，如母赴嬰兒。」』僧曰：『如何是真友不待請？』法眼代云：『此是基法師語。』」

The Chuandeng lu states: "A monk asked a lecturer on the Amitābha Sūtra: 'Water, birds, and groves of trees all practice mindfulness of the Buddha, mindfulness of the Dharma, and mindfulness of the Saṅgha. What does this mean?' The lecturer said: 'Master Ji said: "A true friend does not wait for an invitation, just as a mother rushes to her infant."' The monk asked: 'What is a true friend who does not wait for an invitation?' Fayan answered in his place: 'These are the words of Master Ji.'"
