The Collection Reconciling [the Teachings] [states]: "Question: Sūtras and teachings state: 'The wise ardently seek rebirth in the Pure Land.' Yet in Chan collections there are the words of Master Baozhi: 'The wise know that mind is Buddha; foolish people delight in going to the West.' Does this mean that those who cultivate the Pure Land are foolish people? Answer: These might be words forged by later people. Even if they are the words of Master Baozhi, they merely take up the meaning that mind-only is Buddha and do not take up contemplating and being mindful of Amitābha; this is what is called principle subsuming phenomena. As former worthies have said: 'If principle subsumes phenomena, there is no distinction between defilement and purity or rejecting and accepting; if phenomena subsume principle, there is the difference of abandoning suffering and obtaining bliss.' One might further ask: 'If phenomena and principle are as one and their essence does not subsume each other, how is it then?' The answer: 'One knows indeed it is only upon the autumn river; where can the bright moon and reed blossoms be sought?'"
