The Treatise Resolving Ten Doubts states: "Tuṣita Heaven is where Maitreya dwells; there are also women there, and the devas are attached [to desires]. It is not like Amitābha's Pure Land (and so forth). Formerly in the Western Country, there were three bodhisattvas—Asaṅga, Vasubandhu, and Siṃhabhadra—who made a covenant to be reborn together in Tuṣita. Whichever reached there first and saw Maitreya vowed to return and report. Siṃhabhadra died first, but for several years did not return. Later Vasubandhu died, and only after three years did he return. Asaṅga asked: 'Why were you so slow?' Vasubandhu replied: 'I arrived there, listened to Maitreya preach the Dharma for a single session, circumambulated him, and immediately came back. The days in that heaven are long, hence three years passed here. As for Siṃhabhadra, having been born there in an outer heavenly palace, he became attached to the five desires. Since arriving he has not seen Maitreya at all, which is why he did not return.' When even small bodhisattvas born there still become attached to the five desires, how much more so ordinary mortals! For this reason, rebirth in the Western Land is encouraged, while rebirth in Tuṣita is not encouraged."
