《龍舒淨土文》曰「五祖戒禪師，乃東坡前身，應驗非一。以前世修行故，今世聰明過人。以其習氣未除，致今生多緣詩語意外受竄謫。生此世界，多受苦如是。聞東坡南行，唯帶阿彌陀佛一軸。人問其故，答云：『此軾生西方公據也。』若果如是，則東坡今生得計矣。」

The Longshu jingtu wen states: 'Chan Master Wuzu Jie was the previous life of Dongpo, and the verifications were more than one. Because of his practice in the previous life, in this life his intelligence surpassed other men. Because his residual propensities were not eliminated, it caused him in this life to unexpectedly suffer banishment on many occasions on account of poetic words. Being born in this world, he suffered much bitterness like this. I have heard that when Dongpo went south, he took along only a hanging scroll of Amitābha. When someone asked the reason, he answered: "This is Shi's official voucher for being born in the West." If it was truly like this, then Dongpo secured his strategy in this life.'
