Top Graduate Wang Shipeng of Yongjia was, in his previous life, Head Monk Yan of Mount Wannian. Yan had once personally inscribed a stele at Stone Bridge, which exists at present. One day, the Top Graduate traveled in the mountains and arrived next at the Stone Bridge Hermitage to pay homage to the Fangguang [Monastery]. That night, a monk of Yingzhen Hermitage suddenly dreamed that Head Monk Yan had arrived at the mountain. Awaking from the dream, he thought: "Master Yan has been parinirvāṇized for a long time; for what reason would he arrive here?" At dawn, the Top Graduate, Duke Wang, arrived. The head monk spoke of his dream, and Wang also said of himself that throughout his life he had often dreamed of entering here. Believing and knowing it was not mistaken, he composed two poems to show his sentiments: / The road separates transcendent and mortal, but the thought can reach through; / The Stone Bridge allows me […] a long rainbow. / Beside the bridge at Fangguang my spirit has roamed long; / It was not just amidst climbing with staff and sandals. // Before reaching Stone Bridge, I had already arrived; / What meets my eyes is just as when entering a dream. / The monk calls me Head Monk Yan; / In a previous life I once inscribed this mountain's stele.
