During the reign of Emperor Gaozong, before the Lady Mother of Grand Preceptor Qin Hui had given birth to him, she suddenly dreamed of a monk of ancient and imposing stature who came to the gate seeking alms. The lady assented. 'Where are you from, monk?' He answered, saying: 'I come from Yanfeng in Wenzhou. Knowing that I have an affinity with your residence, I seek to lodge here for one night.' The lady gladly assented. Subsequently, she gave birth to the gentleman. When the gentleman grew up and entered the official career, one night he chanced to dream of entering a rock cave and sitting in dhyāna, which his mind found very extraordinary. Later, in the course of his official appointments, his route passed through Taizhou and Wenzhou, and when he arrived at Lingfeng, he toured the Cave of the Five Hundred Arhats. Looking at the secluded wonders of the rock cave and the sheer cliffs standing upright, it was startlingly just like an old scene. He then recalled the dream at his mother's conception of him, and composed a quatrain inscribed on the wall: 'The stone chamber in my dream remains unchanged; / Now twenty years have passed in travelling as an official. / Wishing to settle worldly karmic ties, on what day will they end? / Taking the supreme teaching to heart, I am earnest and sincere.' When the gentleman passed away, a man of talent composed a memorial for his funerary offering, which contained the lines: 'Pitying the difficulties of a hundred battles hung over the sea, / He arose from the samādhi absorption of the stone chamber.' This refers to that event. The text appears in the Bofang ji.
