The Yijian zhi states: 'The monk Shanmin was a native of Changsha. He was the abbot of Guanyin Cloister in Hongzhou, and afterward retired to reside in the Western Hall of Guangxiao. In the autumn of the twenty-third year of the Shaoxing era, he fell ill. Dong Shu of Poyang, who was a Revenue Officer acting as the commandant of Xinjian, resided beside the temple. Pitying his illness, he daily prepared rice gruel and food to offer him. Whenever Min ate it, he would invariably express his gratitude again and again. Zuxuan, the abbot of Guangxiao, said to him: "You are a person beyond the mundane world, yet you receive offerings from a worldly man and are unweariedly intent on repaying him. As I see it, in another day you will surely become a child of the Dong family." Although Min was moved by his words, in the end he could not avoid it. At that time, Dong's wife, lady Zhu, was pregnant. Min's illness became increasingly grave, and he died on the first day of the tenth month at the hour of the serpent (9–11 a.m.). Just as the temple was striking the bell and reciting the Buddha's name, someone came in from outside and said: "The Revenue Officer's wife has given birth to a daughter." The time was exactly the same, and people quite believed it.'
