The Pure Practice Teaching states: "All who cultivate pure land practice must arouse their minds skillfully. If, for oneself, one abhors the five defilements and delights in the nine grades, this contravenes bodhicitta; it is a śrāvaka practice and should not be aroused. If, for the sake of sentient beings, one gives rise to great compassion, seeks rebirth in that land, hopes quickly to achieve spiritual power and the power of the Way, traverses the ten directions, saves and delivers all, and causes them to accomplish the Buddha Way together, this accords with bodhicitta; it is a bodhisattva practice and must be aroused."
