Vinaya Master Zhao of the Fahuibaoge in Qiantang cultivated the Pure Land repentance liturgy for the five assemblies of renunciants. Wuweizi saw it and inscribed on the back: 'The Land of Bliss is pure; without the power of vows, one cannot be reborn there. The sins and faults of the defiled world cannot be removed without repentance. Sins are like tiles and stones: thrown into water, they must sink; the power of vows is a boat: carrying them, it crosses over. Once one has transcended to the other shore, thought after thought is bodhi; through the majestic spiritual power of the Three Jewels, evil is entirely extinguished. One who contemplates like this performs the lowest grade of repentance. Sins are like ice and snow accumulated in the deepest shade; when the great sun is mild and harmonious, the ice and snow melt away; severe freezing transforms completely, nurturing and moistening the sprouts. One who contemplates like this performs the middle grade of repentance. Like the great void, spacious, penetrating, empty, and tranquil, which dust cannot soil and water cannot wash: in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down, what is not Amitābha? In birth, death, going, and coming, what is not the Pure Land? One who contemplates like this performs the highest grade of repentance. If one awakens to this, the mind is extinguished and sins vanish; yet if one has not achieved this perfection, repentance liturgy should take precedence. This is shown to the five assemblies; they should follow these words.' (Found in the Wuwei ji)
