The *Lushan shiba xian zhuan* states: "Huichi was the younger brother of Master Yuan. He had a serene and vast capacity, and an outstanding, refreshing demeanor. One day he took leave of Yuan to enter Shu. Yuan tried to detain him to no avail, and sighed, saying, 'In human life, people love coming together; do you alone delight in parting?' Chi said, 'If one is bound by emotions of attachment and togetherness, one originally ought not to have left home. Now, having severed affection to seek the Way, I take only the West as my goal.' Thereupon they parted with heavy hearts."
