The larger Sukhāvatīvyūha-sūtra states: "The Buddha addressed Ānanda: 'The light of the Buddha Amitāyus is the most supreme and foremost, beyond the reach of the light of all other Buddhas. It illuminates either a hundred Buddha-worlds or a thousand Buddha-worlds; to put it essentially, it illuminates Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. Therefore, the Buddha Amitāyus is also called the Buddha of Boundless Light, the Buddha of Limitless Light, the Buddha of Unhindered Light, the Buddha of Incomparable Light, the Buddha of Blazing Flame Light, the Buddha of Purity Light, the Buddha of Joyful Light, the Buddha of Wisdom Light, the Buddha of Unceasing Light, the Buddha of Inconceivable Light, the Buddha of Ineffable Light, and the Buddha of Light Surpassing the Sun and Moon. If there are sentient beings who encounter this light, their three defilements are eradicated, and their body and mind become gentle.'"
