Longshu said: 'In investigating Chan, to attain great awakening and thereupon escape transmigration in birth and death is certainly supreme. However, I fear those who reach this are few. If one cultivates the West, one cuts directly through transmigration, with not one in ten thousand failing. Therefore, I now urge those who investigate Chan to reserve a moment of leisure every day to cultivate the West. If one truly attains great awakening and transcends transmigration, one is still far from the Buddha-ground; to go further to see Amitābha Buddha and pay obeisance and respect—what harm is there in that? If one has not yet attained great thorough awakening, when one's lifespan suddenly runs out, if one goes directly to the West to see the Buddha and hear the Dharma, why worry about not attaining great awakening? If one does not cultivate the West, one inevitably follows one's karma to receive different retributions.'
