The Continued Biographies of Eminent Monks states: 'During the Northern Wei, Chan Master Cheng exclusively upheld the Lotus Sūtra. At the end of his life, he took birth in the Xue family of Hedong. Born able to speak of events of his past lives, he took no pleasure in worldly life and wished again to become a monk. His father took office as the governor of Sizhou, and following his father to his official post, he went to the Qidi Temple in Zhongshan, vividly remembering his former abode. Thereupon he sought out his disciple from that time and said to him: "Do you still remember when you followed me crossing the water to Langshan—that Chan Master Cheng was myself." The disciple assented. His parents, fearing he would leave the household, took a wife for him. From then on, he forgot the events of his past life.'
