The Laṅkāvatāra-sūtra says: 'There are immeasurable causes and conditions why one should not eat meat.' The flesh of sentient beings is fundamentally not something to be eaten; because people have grown accustomed to it through what their ears hear and their eyes see, they do not recognize its fault. If one can cut it off, it is indeed best. If one cannot cut it off, one should temporarily eat the three kinds of clean meat and reduce consumption—that is, meat that one did not see killed, did not hear killed, and does not suspect was killed for oneself. If one eats dishes with two kinds of meat, omit one of them; if both meals contain meat, make one of the meals vegetarian. A person's allotted sustenance in life is fixed; acting like this can naturally prolong life. The next day, one may chant and recite on behalf of these sentient beings to assist and dedicate merit to them, so that one can perhaps resolve grudges and eradicate sin. According to what King Yama told Zheng Lin, if one recites that Buddha with utmost sincerity, they will certainly attain rebirth.
