5.34

翥，暴死至陰府，見閻羅王。王曰：「據案簿，君曾勸一老人念佛，已生淨土。君承此福，亦合生淨土，故召來相見。」翥曰：「先許《金剛》萬卷、巡禮五臺，未欲往生。」王曰：「誦經巡禮固為好事，不如早生淨土。」王知志不可奪，乃放還。以此知勸人修者非徒往生，又感動幽冥也。

Zhu died suddenly and arrived at the underworld, where he saw King Yama. The king said: "According to the records, you once encouraged an old person to practice recollection of the Buddha, who has already attained rebirth in the Pure Land. Receiving this merit, you too should be reborn in the Pure Land; therefore, I summoned you here to meet." Zhu said: "I previously vowed [to recite] ten thousand scrolls of the Diamond [Sūtra] and make a pilgrimage to Mount Wutai; I do not yet wish to attain rebirth." The king said: "Chanting scriptures and going on pilgrimage are certainly good deeds, yet they do not compare to early rebirth in the Pure Land." Knowing that his resolve could not be shaken, the king released him to return. From this one knows that encouraging others to practice not only leads to rebirth, but also moves the unseen realm.
