吳瓊，先為僧，後還俗。前後兩娶，生二子。屠沽無所不為，常與人作厨子，每殺鷄鴨等物命，以手持起叫云：「阿彌陀佛！子好脫此身去。」遂殺之，連稱佛數聲。每切肉時，一面切一面念阿彌陀佛。常念佛不輟，教村中人念經修懺，及勸人念阿彌陀佛。後眼上生瘤如鷄子大，乃憂怖，造一草菴，分散其妻子，晝夜念佛修懺。紹興二十三年秋，告村中人云：「瓊來日戌時去也。」人皆笑之。將用椀鉢鍋子盡與人。次日晚，報諸道友行婆云：「瓊去時將至。」盡來與瓊高聲念佛相助。將布衫當酒飲了，即寫頌云「似酒皆空，問甚禪宗。今日珍重，明月清風。」端坐合掌念佛，叫一聲「佛來」即化去。

Wu Qiong had formerly been a monk, but later returned to lay life. He married twice and fathered two sons. He engaged in butchering and brewing, stopping at nothing; he often worked as a cook for others. Whenever he slaughtered living creatures such as chickens and ducks, he held them up in his hand and shouted: "Amitābha Buddha! You had better shed this body and go!" Then he slaughtered them, repeatedly calling upon the Buddha several times. Whenever he chopped meat, he chanted Amitābha Buddha while chopping. He constantly practiced recollection of the Buddha without interruption, taught the villagers to chant scriptures and practice repentance, and encouraged people to recite Amitābha Buddha. Later, a tumor as large as a chicken egg grew over his eye; terrified and worried, he built a thatched hut, parted with his wife and children, and day and night practiced recollection of the Buddha and repentance. In the autumn of the twenty-third year of Shaoxing, he told the villagers: "Qiong will depart tomorrow at the hour of the Dog." Everyone laughed at him. He gave away all his bowls and pots to others. The next evening, he announced to all his fellow practitioners and elder laywomen: "The time for Qiong to depart is at hand." They all came to assist Qiong by chanting the Buddha's name in loud voices. He pawned his cloth shirt for wine, drank it, and then wrote a verse: / "Like wine, all is empty; / Why bother asking about the Chan lineage? / Today take good care; / Bright moon and pure breeze." / Sitting upright with palms together and chanting the Buddha's name, he shouted, "The Buddha has arrived!" and thereupon passed away.
