Those who kill sentient beings receive the retribution of a short life; those who rejoice in killing receive the retribution of afflictions. As for those who suffer from illness, it is the lingering retribution of killing living beings, the direct retribution of eating meat, and also the direct retribution of vexing and harming sentient beings. Wholesomeness and unwholesomeness follow a person like a shadow following a form; they cannot be avoided. Therefore, those suffering from illness should reproach themselves: "It is on account of evil conditions that I have come to this." Constantly recollect Amitābha Buddha and make a vow: "I vow never again to do evil, never again to kill living beings, and never again to vex and harm any sentient beings. I vow that this body will quickly leave sickness and suffering. After seeing the Buddha and attaining the Way, I will completely deliver and liberate all sentient beings killed in previous lives and in this life, as well as all enemies and kin, causing them all to be born in the Pure Land." Recite mindfulness after mindfulness without interruption; when mindfulness naturally matures, one will definitely be born in Sukhāvatī. If one further transforms others, having them mutually exhort and transform one another, when the power of merit prevails, the wholesome retribution will naturally respond: one's sickness and suffering will surely heal, and after death the meritorious retribution will be boundless.
