參禪者多不信淨土，以謂著相，欲直指人心見性成佛。此說甚善，極不易到，反成弊者多矣。今故詳言參禪之弊，且引事跡為證，與諸修行不知其要者併舉而言，故此卷名指迷歸要。

Many who practice Chan do not believe in the Pure Land, considering it grasping at characteristics, and wishing to directly point to the human mind to see one's nature and attain Buddhahood. This doctrine is very fine, yet extremely difficult to reach, and those who instead suffer its pitfalls are many. Therefore, I now explain in detail the pitfalls of practicing Chan, citing historical events as evidence, and discuss them alongside various practitioners who do not know the essentials. Hence this fascicle is titled "Pointing Out Delusion and Returning to the Essentials".
