Tanjian was exceptionally meticulous in his conduct, and constantly vowed to ascend to Peaceful Nourishment in body and see Amitābha Buddha face to face. Peaceful Nourishment is the Pure Land. Therefore, even for a good deed as small as the tip of a hair, he dedicated it all [to that end]. One day while in samādhi, he saw Amitābha Buddha sprinkle water on his face, saying: 'Wash away your dust and defilement, purify your mind and thoughts, and your body and speech will both be made solemn and pure.' He also took out a lotus flower from a vase and gave it to him. Emerging from samādhi, he bade farewell to the monks of the temple. As night deepened, he walked alone under the corridor reciting Amitābha Buddha's name. As the fifth watch approached, his voice became ever more vehement. When morning came, his disciples inquired after him as usual; he sat cross-legged without moving, and when they approached and looked at him, he had passed away.
