To receive three thousand from others and not consider it much is greed. To spend two thousand oneself and promptly consider it too much is miserliness. The fault of greed and stinginess is shared by the multitude, yet they do not perceive it in themselves. Only if one can discard this can one become a worthy person. In this way, there is no wholesome karma that cannot be done, and no unwholesome karma that cannot be abstained from. Why? Because one is not stingy with wealth for doing good, nor greedy for wealth to do evil. If one cultivates the Pure Land in this manner, one will certainly not be born in the lowest grade. Furthermore, if one can turn around to transform others, causing them to exhort and transform one another in turn, then because one is free from the mind of greed and stinginess, others will certainly hold one in greater respect and gladly follow one's teaching. Those transformed will certainly be many; what doubt can there be of rebirth in the highest grade? The retribution of blessings during one's lifetime can also be seen immediately. This cannot be fully expressed in words; practitioners should know it for themselves.
