Those who are servants and concubines should reflect to themselves thus: 'Because I did not cultivate blessings in past lives, I have fallen into poverty and lowly status. While others enjoy ease and comfort, I must toil diligently; while others enjoy delicious flavors, I eat coarse food; while others wear light and fine garments, I wear coarse and poor ones. All of these are karmic conditions from past lives; what is past cannot be undone. From this time forward, I must resolve to do good and correct my faults, be loyal, honest, diligent, and cautious, and serve with careful attention, so as to protect this body and plant future blessings. Constantly recollect Amitābha Buddha, thought after thought without interruption; when thoughts naturally become pure and ripe, one will definitely be born in Sukhāvatī.' If one also transforms one's fellows, causing them to exhort and transform one another in turn, then the retribution of blessings will be inexhaustible, and one will certainly be born in the middle and highest grades.
