Those who are farmers should reflect to themselves thus: 'Although agriculture is the fundamental occupation, yet when plowing the fields and planting the earth, the slaughter and harm to minute living beings is by no means small. Although this cannot be avoided, if one can do one's utmost to protect them fully, repent of past transgressions, constantly recollect Amitābha Buddha, and make a great vow saying: "May I, after seeing the Buddha and attaining the Way, first deliver all the minute sentient beings killed since I began farming, and next deliver all sentient beings, whether enemies or kin." If one constantly maintains this thought, letting thought after thought be uninterrupted, and thoughts naturally become pure and ripe, one will definitely be born in Sukhāvatī.' If one turns around to transform others, causing them to exhort and transform one another in turn, one will obtain blessings in this present life, and after death will certainly be born in the middle and highest grades.
