Those who are merchants should reflect to themselves thus: 'In my lifetime of buying and selling, how could there be no deceit and falsehood? If it is bolts of cloth and silk, they are all obtained from the lives of silkworms, so it cannot be said to be entirely without fault and evil. Once life ends, one goes according to karmic conditions. It is better to repent and do good, conducting business according to one's lot. If one's destiny holds much wealth, it will naturally arrive gradually; if one's destiny holds little wealth, even gaining much will be lost. Moreover, the quota of wealth in a person's life is limited: if sought eagerly and the quota is filled, it will bring about an early end; if sought gently and it comes slowly, it can prolong one's life. One should harbor this intention in one's mind. One should recollect Amitābha Buddha and vow that after seeing the Buddha and attaining the Way, one will first deliver all sentient beings with whom one has had dealings, next deliver all enemies and kin, and next deliver all sentient beings with whom one has or has not conditions. In this way, thought after thought without interruption, when thoughts naturally become pure and ripe, one will definitely be born in Sukhāvatī.' If one turns around to transform others, causing them to exhort and transform one another in turn, one will obtain blessings in this present life, and after death will certainly be born in the middle and highest grades.
