Butchers should reflect to themselves: "People crave their meat, so they raise living creatures; I crave the profit, so I kill living creatures. Killing those living creatures, I nourish my own body and support my family. I have flesh and blood, and I desire peace, happiness, and freedom from disease. As for the lives of those creatures, I slaughter them; the sins are immeasurable. If I can put an end to the butchering trade, that is best. If I cannot yet put an end to it, I should at least reduce and lessen it; this is second best. If I cannot do even this, I should at least constantly recollect Amitābha Buddha, which is far better than not recollecting him. Next, repent and make a great vow: 'After seeing the Buddha and attaining the Way, I will completely deliver all sentient beings killed throughout my life, causing them all to be born in the Pure Land.'" Reciting mindfulness after mindfulness without interruption like this, when mindfulness naturally matures, one will also be born in Sukhāvatī. If one further transforms others, having them mutually exhort and transform one another, in the present life one can eliminate evil karma, and after death the meritorious retribution will also be boundless.
