Question: Sukhāvatī is merely [a Land of] Common Residence and is not fundamentally a True Reward [Land]; why is it said that some are born in the reward land and see the Buddha's true body? Answer: Do you suppose that apart from the Land of Common Residence there is a separate True Reward Land? One should know that the [other] three lands are not separate from the Land of Common Residence; it is only that the bodies and the enjoyment of the environment are progressively different. As the sūtra states: “The height of the Buddha Amitābha is sixty trillion nayutas of Ganges sands of yojanas,” and so forth. Ancient masters said: “This is the True Reward Body.” Moreover, Zhachuan said: “The four lands of the realm of Sukhāvatī are not identical; but how could this be so only for Sukhāvatī?” Jingxi said: “Contemplating this land directly, it is complete with the four lands, just as the ocean assembly of the Avataṃsaka at that time was not apart from the Jeta Grove, yet the great śrāvakas neither knew nor saw it—it is of this sort.”
